Links between the EU and Sport

“We must ensure that the market economy is working properly. It is like a game of football: if there is no referee, there can be no game……” are the words of the former EU Commissioner Karel van Miert used to describe the role of the EU Commission.

The European Court of Justice issued a decision as far back as 1974 that sport falls within community law as a commercial activity. Accordingly, several European laws and activities exist that are of relevance for sport.
